The World Cup is only a few months away, and it is already clear which players will be on the United States World Cup team at a few positions. However, at center-forward, there are still several players competing to be on the roster.
Which Center-Forwards Are the Most Likely to Be On the United States World Cup Team
One of the biggest remaining questions surrounding the United States roster for this fall’s world cup is which center-forwards will be selected for the roster. Jesus Ferreira, who is having a phenomenal season for FC Dallas, will almost certainly be on the United States World Cup team, but it isn’t clear which other players will travel to Qatar.
Over the first few weeks of the season in Europe, a few American center-forwards have started the season well. Throughout the next few months, they will compete to make the roster alongside Ferreira.
Malik Tillman, Rangers
A few months ago, Malik Tillman was a part of Germany’s international team, representing the country at every youth level after U15. However, at the start of the summer, Tillman decided to represent the United States, where he played on the U15 team, at the international level.
Tillman made his debut for the United States in their games at the start of the summer. Since then, he has joined Rangers in Scotland on loan from Bayern Munich.
The start to the season for Tillman has been phenomenal for him and for Rangers. He has scored a goal in the Premiership against St. Johnstone already this season, and has been even better in Rangers Champions League qualification matches.
This week, Rangers qualified for the Champions League group stage after a 1-0 win in the second leg of their final qualification match against PSV Eindhoven. Tillman was phenomenal in the win, earning the assist for the goal and playing well throughout the game. He was arguably the best player in the match, and is one of the main reasons Rangers qualified for the group stage.
Overall, Tillman has had an incredible start to the season, and his chances of making the United States World Cup roster have continued to grow since he played for the team this summer. Tillman is not exclusively a center-forward, and he can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wing.
In the past, the United States has frequently played with a center-forward instead of a striker under Berhalter. Tillman could provide depth at the position, while also being able to play as a winger or in the midfield. His flexibility in where he can play could result in him playing in his first World Cup this fall.
Jordan Pefok, Union Berlin
Jordan Pefok scored 22 goals for BSC Young Boys in the Swiss Super League last season, which was the most in the league. This summer, he joined Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, and he has continued to play extremely well.
Pefok has scored two goals and had one assist during his first three games in the Bundesliga, including a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win against RB Leipzig. He has also scored in the DFB-Pokal already this season.
Earlier this summer, Pefok was not on the United States roster for the team’s international friendlies and CONCACAF Nations League matches. However, Pefok will likely be on the United States roster for the team’s upcoming international friendlies at the end of September.
If Pefok is selected to play in the United States’ final friendlies for the World Cup he will become one of the favorites to be on the roster this fall. His start to the season in the Bundesliga has given him a very good chance to travel to the World Cup in a few months.
Josh Sargent, Norwich City
Josh Sargent has frequently played for the United States national team over the last several years, and a few years ago he was the favorite to start at center-forward the next time the United States World Cup team reached the World Cup.
However, Sargent has not frequently been selected to the US roster over the last few months. He hasn’t appeared in a game for the national team since September of last year.
That is partially due to the fact that Sargent plays for Norwich City. Last season, Norwich finished last in the Premier League and was relegated. Sargent played in 26 Premier League games, scoring two goals. During the entire season, Norwich City only scored 23 total goals in 38 league matches.
This year Norwich City is playing in the EFL Championship, and Sargent has had an extremely successful start to the season. He has already scored three goals, including two goals against Millwall in the fifth game of the season.
Like Pefok, Sargent will hope to be selected for the United States friendlies in September. Both players will compete with each other to play in those games and in the World Cup, and whoever plays in next month’s friendlies will be the player more likely to travel to this fall as part of the United States World Cup team.
