Potential Strikers Manchester United Could Sign in January

After Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United’s game against Tottenham early on Wednesday, he will not take part in this weekend’s game. The club could choose to sign a new striker during the January transfer window.

Potential Strikers Manchester United Could Sign in January

Manchester United defeated Tottenham 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The biggest storyline following the game wasn’t the team’s win, but rather Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to leave the bench and field before the game had ended.

As a result, Ronaldo will not take part in Manchester United’s game vs Chelsea on Saturday. There is a possibility Manchester United and Ronaldo will choose to part ways in January, and the team may need to sign a new striker during the January transfer window. Here is a look at a few players the team could consider signing.

Ivan Toney, Brentford

Ivan Toney has had one of the best starts to the season of any player in the Premier League. In the 11 games he has played so far this season, Toney has scored eight goals along with two assists.

In addition to his success this season, Toney scored 12 goals in 33 Premier League games last season. This season, his average match rating is 7.62 according to FotMob, the highest among any Brentford player.

Toney played a key role in Brentford’s 4-0 win against Manchester United earlier this season. He had two assists in the game which helped lead to Brentford’s third and fourth goals of the game.

His strong start to the season led to his first-ever matches for the English National Team, which took place in September. Toney could be a part of this year’s English team at the World Cup.

This is only Toney’s third-ever season in the Premier League and only the second in which he’s played more than 10 games. However, in January, multiple teams will likely attempt to sign him.

Benjamin Sesko, RB Salzburg

Another player Manchester United could potentially choose to attempt to sign is Benjamin Sesko. This summer, the team reportedly had an interest in signing Sesko, but the transfer ultimately didn’t take place.

Sesko, who is 19 years old, has spent the last two seasons playing with RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. He scored 3 goals in 15 matches in the league last season and has scored four goals in 12 matches this season.

Compared to Toney, Sesko doesn’t have as much experience in a major league. However, he is several years younger. Signing Sesko could make sense for Manchester United if they could continue his development.

Cody Gakpo, PSV Eindhoven

Cody Gakpo has had one of the best starts to the season of any player. In PSV Eindhoven’s first 10 Eredivisie matches, Gakpo has scored nine goals in addition to seven assists.

Like Sesko, Manchester United considered signing Gakpo this summer. However, the transfer ultimately didn’t take place after the team chose to sign Antony from Erik ten Hag’s former club Ajax.

However, if Ronaldo departs, Gakpo could be a player Manchester United could sign this January, especially considering how well he has played so far this season.

Unlike some of the other players on this list, Gakpo can play in every position on offense, as both a left or right winger or as a center-forward. That could be another reason Manchester United could consider signing him yet again in January.

Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus

It would almost certainly be impossible for Manchester United to sign Vlahovic in January, as he is one of Juventus’ most important players. However, he is still worth mentioning as a potential player the team could choose to sign, especially if Manchester United waits until next summer to sign a striker.

Vlahovic is arguably one of the best young forwards in the world. He has scored six goals and has one assist in 10 Serie A games for Juventus this year after scoring 24 goals in 33 games for Fiorentina last season and 21 goals in 34 games the year prior.

After the first 11 games of the season, Vlahovic is currently Juventus’ top scorer in Serie A. He scored the match-winning goal against Torino for Juventus earlier this month on October 15.

Because of how important he is to Juventus, it is unlikely the club would be willing to part ways with him in January. However, next summer, he could be a fantastic signing for Manchester United to improve the team’s offense.
