Liverpool Football Club has finished the first three games of the Premier League season with zero wins, two draw, and one loss. Currently, Liverpool sits in 16th place in the league, and much of that is due to injuries.
Liverpool has five starters, or starting-level players out with injuries right now. The Reds also have five squad-level players injured as well, leaving their depth to be bear thin at the moment. The situation may be unfortunate, but with the purchase of a new midfielder, and another attacker, Liverpool can stop the bleeding and buy them time to get back to competing for the league.
A New Midfielder Is Vital
The biggest area of Need for Liverpool is their midfield. Thiago, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones are all out with injuries. This has forced the likes of James Milner, Harvey Elliott, and Fabio Carvalho to be needed to play crucial minutes. Elliot and Carvalho do not look ready just yet for that level while Milner’s pace and age make me more suitable as a squad player.
Liverpool has been rumored to be after Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham for years now. The Reds typically do not like to overpay for players and try to get as much value as they can. However, Liverpool may be in a position where they need to shell out the money for Bellingham if they want to compete for the league. If the fix is there, do whatever it takes to fix it.
Competition Won’t Wait
One thing that has been apparent over the last few seasons, and no team knows better than Liverpool, is that the competition does not slip up. The competition for the last few seasons has been strictly Manchester City, which has won the league on record points and a 98-point win over the last few seasons.
The Premier League is no longer like it used to be, where 80 points or so would win the title. now it seems as though if a team wants to believe that they are contenders, they’re fighting for 90 to 100 points a season. With only two out of a possible nine points, Liverpool is already beginning to be in panic mode if they need to get to a century mark.
The Starters Need Breaks
A huge concern for this Liverpool squad has been how slow they have looked. The entire midfield as well as the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, have looked a step off of their typical game, and that is likely due to how many games they have played over the last few seasons.
Liverpool has starters that typically never miss games, such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, and Trent Alexander Arnold. While these players have proven to be some of the best in the world, even the best in the world can only play at such a top level for so long.
Liverpool needs to add some more defenders, midfielders, and attackers to allow for a more reasonable rotation in the squad. The Premier League is allowing five substitutes now per game, and Liverpool needs to utilize that rule more than any other team.
